Description
1 and 3 Wildwood Road is a pair of houses built in 1912, designed by G. L. Sutcliffe. They are constructed of brick in Flemish bond with red brick dressings and some structural timber framing. The roofs are tiled and gable-ended with swept eaves. The houses are two and three storeys tall, featuring various dormers. Their designs are strongly asymmetrical with scattered windows, incorporating elements from the Vernacular Revival styles to create a dynamic composition with formal and textural contrasts. This design complements the gentle curve of the road at this location. The rear elevations enhance the beauty of the Heath Extension to the west, with balconies that likely served as sleeping porches. The doors and windows are designed authentically. This pair is part of a notable group of buildings by Sutcliffe, which includes Nos. 1-15 (odd), all of which are paired and share a limited range of complementary plan forms. The design of this first pair is reminiscent of Nos. 13 and 15.
