Description
Nos 249 to 259 Regent Street, including Nos 1 and 2 John Princes Street, is an office and shop block located in the south western quadrant of Oxford Circus. Designed by Henry Tanner in 1912 and completed in 1925, the building features Portland stone cladding and a steel frame with a slate roof. It is designed in a classical style with Beaux Arts details, presenting a symmetrical composition alongside the other three quadrant blocks that frame the circus.
The building stands four tall storeys high with double attics featuring steep mansards and pavilion roofs. The upper floors, including the returns, are arranged with projecting pavilions that flank the quadrant and serve as terminal features. The fenestration is grouped in sequence from the south end of the block as follows: three windows, a splayed corner, one window, three windows, nine windows, three windows to the quadrant, and three windows to Oxford Street.
The ground floor shop fronts are articulated by pilasters decorated with wreathed shields and crowned by cherub masks. The upper floors have architraved bronzed casements, with the second floor featuring alternating open segmental and triangular pediments. The pavilions are adorned with a giant order of Ionic columns and pilasters, enriched window aprons, and bronze balconies at their central windows. Central stone dormers rise from the attic, topped with open pediments. The quadrant is defined by giant Ionic columns that divide tripartite bronze pilastered and framed windows. A main entablature runs below the attic, which is topped with a balustraded parapet. Additional features include corniced dormers, stone chimney stacks, and roof ridges with bronze crestings and triumphal ornaments.
