Description
No. 19 Upper Grosvenor Street is a terraced town house built between 1909 and 1910 by Maurice Hulbert. The building is constructed of stone and features a slate roof, showcasing a style of free classicism that draws on Palladian themes. It stands three storeys tall, with a basement and an attic storey that includes a dormered mansard roof. The facade is three windows wide and is flanked by channelled quoin pilasters.
The ground floor is rusticated and features a semicircular arched opening leading to a recessed porch on the right, with the door and lobby redesigned by Gerald Lacoste in 1936. The ground floor also has sash windows arranged in a simplified Venetian composition. On the first floor, there is an elaborated five-light Doric order Venetian window that spans the full width of the building, complete with a carved tympanum. The second floor windows have eared architraves, with the central window being particularly ornate; sunk panels separate the attic storey sashes.
A guilloche frieze runs below the second floor sill course, and there is a heavy main cornice supported by paired brackets above the second floor. The building is topped with a crowning cornice and a balustraded parapet, with a central dormer that has a pediment. Additionally, ornamental ironwork adorns the first-floor balcony and area railings. The interior is opulent, reflecting Edwardian design in the neo-Georgian and neo-Adam styles.
