Description

This is a terraced town house located on Upper Grosvenor Street in Westminster, built around 1732 by Lawrence Neale, who was a carpenter. Charles Elliot made alterations and likely added height to the building between 1792 and 1793. The house is stucco faced with a slate roof, and it stands three stories high with a basement and an attic, which has dormers in a mansard roof. It is four windows wide, with rusticated quoins framing the front. The entrance, in the second bay from the left, has a Doric columned portico-porch added around 1793, leading to a six-panel door with a segmental fanlight above. The windows are recessed sash windows, set under segmental arches. The attic windows are square-headed, set within shallow architraves. A cornice runs above the second floor, topped by a parapet with coping. A delicate cast iron balcony, dating to around 1793, is found on the first floor. Wrought iron area railings are also present. The rear elevation features a bow window added by Charles Elliot. Inside, the front ground floor room retains early 18th-century panelling, a modillion cornice, and likely the original chimney piece. Elliot also made extensive alterations around 1792-93, including moldings. A particularly notable feature is the double apsed staircase, which extends up to the second floor, with stone cantilevered steps and a delicately patterned iron balustrade, similar to that at 66 Grosvenor Street. Other interior details are primarily Edwardian neo-Georgian in style.
