Description

TQ 3080 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER STRAND, WC2 73/34 1.5.86 No 355 G.V. II Chambers and shops. c1850 refacing, possibly by Charles Gray, of C18 house. Stuccoed, slate roof. Venetian Gothic details. 4 storeys and dormered mansard. 3 windows wide. Ground floor altered by mid C20 shop front. 1st floor has slightly advanced almost full width 5 bay colonetted arcade with drip moulds on carved stops and incised roses to spandrels, dog tooth string to applied parapet over. 2nd floor recessed sashes (the original window openings prior to refacing) have superimposed blind arched heads with enriched drip moulds and panelled tympana. Plain 3rd floor sashes but with incised ornament to lintels under elaborate false machicolacion with quatrefoil pierced parapet above and flanking corbelled pinnacle-dies. Included for early use of Venetian Gothic details and group interest.
