Description
This block of flats, located at 45-49 Cleveland Street, was built in 1911. It is constructed of red brick with blue brick detailing and stone dressings, and has a tiled roof. The design is in the Arts and Crafts Free Style, and the building comprises four storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic.
The building has a symmetrical appearance, with projecting wings, each a single bay wide, and a recessed central section, three windows wide. The ground floor of the wings features shop fronts with rusticated granite quoins supporting deep stone fascias, which are finished with festooned panels. Similar stone rustication frames the arched central entrance. The recessed centre has flush squared stone mullion and transom windows on either side. The upper floors of the recessed centre feature three-light mullioned casement windows, which open onto galleries running between the wings. The first-floor gallery has an arcaded stone balustrade, while the upper floor galleries have Arts and Crafts ironwork balustrades. The wings each have five-light stone mullioned casement windows; those on the first floor are segmental arched with a keystone, with a cornice above on the second floor and a plain design on the third floor. The building has heavy projecting eaves and four-light attic dormers, each crowned with finials.
