Description

A grand terrace of houses, numbers 51 to 62 Eaton Square, was built around 1825 to 1830 by Seth Smith. The terrace is constructed from stock brick and stucco, with a largely invisible 20th-century roof extension. The terrace comprises 3 storeys and a basement. Each house is three windows wide, with the end pairs set forward slightly. These end pairs feature a monumental giant order of Corinthian half columns running through the first and second storeys. Projecting Greek Doric porches and round-headed windows, set within round-headed reveals, are visible on the ground floor. A continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor. The windows themselves are sash windows with gauged heads and plate glass. A stucco cornice sits above the second floor, with a subsidiary cornice to the attic. Number 52 was rebuilt to an altered design. Original area railings are present. The terrace demonstrates group value.
