Description

Oslo Court is a block of flats constructed between 1937 and 1938 by Robert Atkinson. It is a long, L-shaped International Modern design built on a narrow site between Charlbert and Culworth Streets, with a two-bay end facing Prince Albert Road and Regent’s Park to the south. The building’s orientation and site depth influenced the ingenious layout, resulting in staggered side elevations. This design ensures that each flat boasts a private, theatre box-like balcony to the south, accessible from the return of the main window, offering views while also demonstrating the cantilevered structure. The concrete is exposed as a lintel and stepped balcony base, while the brickwork’s role is subtly indicated by a soldier course. The building has seven storeys with nine- and seven-bay sides. The main entrance is located in the splayed re-entrant angle on Charlbert Street, featuring a fully glazed lift-stair tower topped with a cantilevered canopy above a roof terrace. Secondary entrances are provided on Culworth and Charlbert Streets, diagonally linked internally, and feature concrete oculi above the stairwells. Crittal metal casement windows curve around the corner to the Prince Albert Road end.
