Description

The Studio-Stable Block to Nuffield Lodge is a stable block that was converted into a studio around 1824 by Decimus Burton as part of a group of outbuildings designed to complement the villa. It was later altered and enlarged around 1909 by Sidney Tatchell for the painter Sigismund Goetze, who was the owner of Grove House at the time. The building features stucco, red brick, and pebble-dash with stucco dressings from Tatchell's alterations, and it has slate roofs.

The structure is one and two storeys high, with a double quadrant facade designed by Burton facing the villa. This facade has irregular and later fenestration, including some glazing bar sash windows, and is topped with a cornice and blocking course. To the south, there is a lower two-storey hipped roof extension by Tatchell, which includes a pilastered doorway with a segmental pediment and sidelights, along with a three-light casement window facing Prince Albert Road. The main studio area, which is adjacent and faces the road, features a large semicircular arched window with glazing bars, with the arch breaking through a stucco entablature and topped with a pediment-gable. A prominent glazed hipped roof light enhances the studio's interior, which is decorated with classical stucco ornament and includes an Ionic column screen around the fireplace recess.
