Description

Nos. 13 to 26 Mount Street form a terrace of shops with rooms above and stabling at the rear, built between 1896 and 1898 by Herbert Read and R.F. Macdonald. The terrace is constructed of red brick with buff stone dressings and a stone-faced ground floor, topped with slate roofs. It exhibits a virtually symmetrical design with Arts and Crafts Jacobethan detailing.

The building stands three main storeys high, with gabled attics and dormers. There are 16 windows in a symmetrical arrangement, plus two additional bays for Nos. 13 and 14. The stone-faced ground floor retains its original shop fronts, featuring quadrant-shouldered lintels that match the shape of the entrance door heads. Most of the entrances retain original joinery, cambered carved transoms, and elaborately barred fanlights. The entrance to No. 20 has been altered and now appears as a large oculus window, which is considered a successful adaptation. A cornice above the ground floor forms a shallow balcony to the first floor. The upper floors feature casements and casemented canted bay windows, some of which are paired. The main cornice wraps around the bays and is interrupted at the centre by a gable, with smaller paired gables at each end and to Nos. 13 and 14. The building includes prominent patterned brickwork and stone-capped chimney stacks. Sections of cast iron area railings and balcony railings are also present.

The terrace is part of the Grosvenor Estate's redevelopment of the area in the late 19th century.
