Description

No. 38 Grosvenor Square is a terraced town house with origins dating back to around 1727. It was remodelled internally and externally in 1776 by John Johnson and refaced between 1854 and 1855 in the standard Italianate style designed by Thomas Cundy II. The building features a stucco facade and a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with a basement and four windows across its front.

The ground floor showcases banded rustication with vermiculated quoining, while the entrance, located in the second bay from the right, is accentuated by a Tuscan column porch. The upper floors display banded rustication around the quoin pilasters and feature eared architrave windows, with pediments above the first-floor windows. A deep, enriched crowning entablature with a cornice supported by modillion brackets is broken over the quoin pilasters, leading to a balustraded parapet. A balustraded balcony on the first floor extends over the porch, and cast iron window guards are present on the consoled sills of the second-floor windows, with a string course marking the third floor.

Inside, No. 38 boasts one of the most complete neo-classical decorative schemes on the estate, seemingly designed by Johnson. This includes plasterwork cornices, friezes, and overmantels, monochrome painted circular panels in the rear bowed end room, and elaborate stucco and painted ceilings on the first floor in the style of Biagio Rebecca. The interior also features high-quality statuary marble chimney pieces, a panelled hall, and a domed stairwell with a wrought scrolled balustrade leading to the stone steps.
