Description

These are a group of four terraced townhouses, numbers 33 to 36, located on Wimpole Street in the City of Westminster. They were built in the 1770s as part of the Portland Estate development and are likely the work of John White. The houses are constructed of stock brick with slate roofs and are four or five stories high, with basements. Each house has a three-window wide front, characterized by a plain, unadorned facade.

The doorways, broad and semicircularly arched, are located to the left of each property and are adjoining at numbers 33 and 34. Numbers 33, 34 and 36 feature stucco rustications, detailed with Coade stone keystones and impost details. The panelled doors are complemented by side lights and patterned fanlights arranged in a Venetian window style; however, number 35 is an exception, and number 36 features Ionic columns framing the door. At number 35, Ionic columns project from the reveals, with an entablature carried above pilaster door jambs and doorhead. Recessed sash windows are set within flat, gauged arches. Numbers 35 and 36 have bracketed cornices over the second floor. The houses feature parapets with copings. Geometric patterned cast iron balconies are positioned on the first floors. Plumbed spike finials adorn the cast iron area railings at number 34; the remaining railings are wrought iron with flambe urn finials. Number 33 possesses elaborate scrolled and urn patterned bracketed lampholders.

The interiors retain original features, including geometrical staircases with wrought iron balustrades, ornate cornices and friezes, and good wreathed plasterwork ceilings in some first-floor rooms. There are also statuary marble fireplaces.
