Description
No. 21 Duchess Mews is a mews building dating from around 1775-76, designed by James Adam and associated with No. 21 Portland Place. The building features a stock brick front that has been altered, with a stuccoed "polite" east front facing the rear of the Portland Place house, and it has a slate roof. It is two storeys high with a basement and is five windows wide, with the central bay slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. The exposed brick basement includes a wide segmental gauged brick arch. The ground floor, partly obscured by 20th-century additions, has a blind semicircular archway that is recessed for two orders, flanked by empty niches. The imposts of the arch extend into a frieze adorned with fluting and rosette decorations. Above the frieze are two circular Coade stone medallions depicting mythological scenes in relief, with rectangular panels featuring a double swag motif on either side. The first floor has three recessed casement windows interspersed with two blocked window openings, and there is a moulded cornice and parapet with coping, along with a pedimented central bay.
