Description

No. 17 Duchess Mews is a corner mews building that was rebuilt during the Edwardian period, likely incorporating the eastern garden front from around 1775-76, which is associated with James Adam's No. 17 Portland Place. The building is constructed of stock brick with fine rubbed red brick dressings and features a stuccoed east front, topped with a slate roof. It has two storeys and is five windows wide, with a three-window return to Duchess Street and a three-bay garden front.

The entrance front features a central semi-elliptical arched doorway with a keyblock and a label mould above. There is a stone-dressed entrance in the left bay, supported by bold consoles beneath a cornice-hood. The first floor has a broad central window with smaller windows flanking it, all of which are recessed glazing bar sashes set under cambered gauged arches. A stone dentil cornice and blocking course adorn the top of the building. The Duchess Street return is similar, with the outer bays featuring shallow semicircular arched recesses. The rear elevation, which is also stuccoed, showcases triple arcading with lunette lights and an impost string. Additionally, there are cast iron area railings along Duchess Street. This building is included for its group value only.
