Description

32 Portland Place is a large end-of-terrace town house built between 1776 and 1780 by James Adam, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. This property was developed speculatively with his brothers and John Elwes on a lease from the Portland Estate. The house is constructed of stock brick with a rusticated stucco ground floor and features a slate roof.

The building has an astylar elevation that completes the symmetrical block of Nos. 26 to 30. It stands four storeys high, including an added attic storey, and has a basement. The façade is three windows wide, with a five-window return to New Cavendish Street that includes the entrance. The semicircular arched doorway is adorned with a double panelled door, sidelights, and a fanlight, all framed by a Corinthian columned stucco porch.

The upper floors feature recessed sashes set in stucco architraves, with the first-floor windows having alternating pediments. There is a plat band that finishes the stuccowork at the first floor, a sill band at the second floor, and a main entablature over the second floor, along with an attic cornice and blocking course. An enriched cast iron balcony is present on the first floor, and the area railings are plumbed with spike finials. The interior has not been inspected.
