Description
This terrace, comprising numbers 87 to 102 Mount Street, along with numbers 26 to 33 South Audley Street, was built as a purpose-built development of shops and flats between 1889 and 1895, designed by Albert J. Bolton. It is part of the late 19th-century redevelopment of the Grosvenor Estate. The building is constructed of fine quality red brick and moulded terracotta, topped with slate roofs, and is built in an ornate Franco-Flemish Renaissance style. The terrace is three storeys high, with gabled attics and lucarnes. The fronts are unequal in width, two windows wide. The ground floor features terracotta shop fronts with panelled pilasters. The upper floors have alternate bays that project and are set back. The projecting bays contain three- or two-plus-two-light mullioned leaded iron casement windows, with richly ornamented gables. The recessed bays have balustrades above the shop fronts. A balustraded balcony and a false balcony, supported by an arch across the recessed bay, are positioned between the projecting bays at the west end. Octagonal corner towers define the South Audley Street range. The building displays seven gables facing Mount Street, two facing South Audley Street, and one facing the Chapel Place North return. Prominent terracotta chimney stacks are a notable feature.
