Description
This is a surviving section of a mid-19th century terrace situated in Talbot Square, London. The terrace comprises numbers 1 to 13 (odd). The building is brick, with a stuccoed finish to the ground floor, which is channelled. It stands four storeys high, with an attic and basement level. Each section consists of two bays, except for number 1, which has three bays. Numbers 7 and 9 project forward and likely originally formed a central feature, with quoins marking the projection. Number 1 has a projecting porch with attached Tuscan columns; the other sections have similar projecting Tuscan porches. The windows are tripartite sashes. A 1st-floor balcony is present, partly with stucco vase balustrades. Round-arched 1st-floor windows are set within keyed surrounds featuring pilasters and consoles that support pediments. 2nd-floor windows are segment-arched sashes with cornices resting on consoles. The 3rd-floor windows are also segment-arched sashes, contained within keyed architraves. The upper windows of numbers 7 and 9 are arranged in groups of three. A modillion cornice runs along the top of the building. Attic windows are set within keyed architraves. The parapet is panelled and retains some original urn finials. Iron railings are present at the basement level. The terrace, along with numbers 2-18 on the opposite side of the square, forms the remaining portions of a grand composition which originally opened onto Sussex Gardens.
