Description
85 Whitehall is a former end-of-terrace town house, now used as offices. It dates from the mid or late 18th century and was remodeled and heightened around 1860. The building underwent alterations between 1982 and 1986 when it was incorporated into a new structure called Richmond House, designed by Whitfield Associates.
The materials used in the construction include stock brick with stucco dressings, and it features a hipped slate roof behind a parapet. The original layout of the building, which likely resembled a standard London town house with a stair hall to the right and principal rooms on the left, is now largely obscured. The service wing and stairs were removed during the 1980s conversion, but the outline of the hall is still visible on the ground floor.
The exterior facing Whitehall is three bays wide, with channelled stucco on the ground floor and stucco surrounds framing the windows above. All the windows are mid-19th century plate-glass sashes. The entrance features a panelled double-leaf door beneath a projecting cornice supported by scroll brackets. Ornamental latticework railings enclose the area in front of the building. A storey-band separates the first and second storeys, and a cornice above the second storey indicates the original height of the building. The north elevation, which is now part of the forecourt for Richmond House, is treated in a similar manner.
The interiors have been significantly altered and are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
