Description
No. 53 Parliament Street is a Grade II listed building located in the City of Westminster. Built in 1896 by architect H Huntly-Gordon, with terracotta work by Leach, this office and chamber building showcases a Franco-Flemish Renaissance style combined with Arts and Crafts sculptural details. It stands four storeys high, with an attic storey in a turret and gable, and features a red brick and buff terracotta exterior topped with a slate roof.
The façade is four windows wide, with a terracotta ground floor that includes an off-centre entrance with a cambered arch, adorned with moulded enrichment, and similarly arched windows beneath an enriched entablature. The upper floors are distinguished by basket handle arched windows in moulded surrounds, as well as mullioned-transomed windows flanking the turret and gabled bay. Decorative bands separate the storeys, and there is an enriched entablature above the third floor. Inside, the building is enhanced by murals created by Sir Frank Brangwyn.
