Description

Terraced town houses dating from circa 1790 to 1800, part of the Portland Estate development extending Upper Wimpole Street. The houses are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. They are four storeys high, with a dormered mansard to five storeys in numbers 7, 10 to 12, and include a basement. The fronts are generally three windows wide, with number 1 having a five-window return and an entrance onto Devonshire Street. The doorways are wide and elliptical in shape, except for numbers 11 and 12, and the return doorway to number 1. These doorways feature panelled doors with side lights, panelled jambs, ornamented door heads, and fanlights, some of which retain patterned glazing. The recessed sash windows on the ground floors of numbers 1 and 10 to 12 are set within a blind arcade and semicircular arches, while upper floors have sashes under flat, gauged arches with stuccoed reveals. A plat band finishes off the ground floor stuccowork. Parapet copings are present, along with a stucco cornice and blocking course to number 8. Continuous balconies with cast and wrought iron geometric or scroll patterns are found on the first floor, dating from the early to mid-19th century. Cast iron area railings with urn finials complete the exterior. Group value is present as a well-preserved example of a late 18th century terrace.
