Description
Nos 40 and 42 Tavistock Street are a pair of end-of-terrace houses with shops, rebuilt or refaced around 1830 to 1840. They are constructed of stock brick and topped with a slate roof, featuring four storeys and a dormered mansard. Each house has a front that is two windows wide, with a three-window return to Catherine Street. The original wooden shop front includes a panelled and glazed door, flanked by display windows and returned, supported by pilasters that carry an entablature-fascia with a projecting cornice. The upper floors feature recessed glazing bar sash windows set within stucco architraves. There is a stucco sill band at the third floor, along with a crowning stucco cornice and blocking course.
