Description

The Church of Our Lady is a Roman Catholic church built between 1833 and 1836, with alterations and extensions made to the east end following war damage. It was restored in the 1970s and designed by J.J. Scoles. The church is constructed of grey brick with ashlar dressings and features a cast iron nave arcade and a Welsh slate roof, all in a Gothic style. It has a six-bay aisled nave, two bay transepts, and a two bay chancel. The west entrance has a pointed door with attached shafts featuring foliate capitals, dog-tooth moulding, and a hood-mould with stops. Above the door, there is a stepped group of three lancet windows and a wheel window in the gable end, with flanking buttresses. The nave aisles are adorned with lancet windows that have a continuous hood-mould and a corbel table. The nave and aisles have separate roofs that are gable-ended. Inside, the nave arcade consists of clustered columns on high plinths with moulded capitals, leading to a quadripartite rib vault decorated with foliate bosses. The west bay of the nave, which is unaisled, has a tall arch, while this bay and the transepts feature flat timber roofs.
