Description

This building, located at 34-42 South Audley Street, is a Grade II listed corner block of houses, shops, and a public house, constructed between 1888 and 1889 by Thomas Verity. It features banded red brick and pink terracotta with slate roofs, showcasing Franco-Flemish and Jacobethan architectural details. The structure has four main storeys, a basement, and gabled or dormered attics, while part of the Mount Street elevation consists of three main storeys.

The design is almost symmetrical, with five major bays along South Audley Street. The outer bays are slightly advanced above the ground floor, and there is an oriel corner turret topped with a copper dome. The return to Mount Street is asymmetrical but similar, comprising four bays with a pair of gables for Nos. 27-28. Shop fronts are set within segmental arched openings, flanked by enriched pilasters that support an entablature topped with an iron balustrade across both elevations.

The upper floors feature canted or flat fronted oriels with mullioned transomed lights, and brick pilaster strips separate the window bays. Each floor is adorned with terracotta cornices and sill bands, and the facades are crowned by a cornice and parapet, above which rise elaborate Franco-Flemish gables. The building is also notable for its prominent chimney stacks.
