Description

No. 99, Park Lane is a "first rate" terraced corner town house built in 1823-25 by John Goldicutt. It is a more substantial house than his design for No. 98. The exterior is entirely stuccoed with a slate roof, standing four storeys high with a basement. The main facade is four windows wide, featuring a three-window wide full-height bow. A long, five-bay return elevation is present.

The entrance is located in the right-hand bay, featuring a panelled door with side lights, a cornice head, and a square skylight, all framed by Ionic engaged columns with panelled dosserets flanking a panelled frieze. The ground floor is channelled with recessed sash windows. Upper floors incorporate architraved sash and casement windows; those on the second floor have cornices, and the window above the doorway features a cornice on consoles. Plat bands and sill bands are present, and the main entablature, continuous with that of No. 98, sits above the second floor. Pilasters are placed between the top-floor windows, and a crowning cornice with a blocking course and guard rail completes the facade. A cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern spans the first floor. Area railings feature spearhead and lotus finials. The return elevation mirrors these details, with a canted bay to the east end.

The interior retains some Grecian detailing from the original design, particularly in the cornices, but largely features later 19th-century alterations. The house was the residence of the philanthropist (Sir) Moses Montefiore from 1826 to 1885.
