Description
Nos 78 to 106 on Sussex Gardens is a terrace of buildings dating from the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with some sections reddened, and feature a stucco ground floor and channelled stucco on the wings. The terrace has a stucco cornice and an additional cornice at the parapet. It stands four storeys high and has a symmetrical design with a 10-bay central section that projects forward, flanked by 10-bay wings, each of which has six outer bays that also project forward.
At the centre, there are projecting Doric porches without bases and round-arched sash windows set in recesses, with one window featuring glazing bars and radial glazing in the head. The entrances are pilastered, and the first floor includes an iron balcony. The windows are either casements or sashes, with some having glazing bars. The windows in the central bays are framed with architraves and topped with hoods on consoles, while the central four bays have pediments. The outer six bays also have architraves and pediments above the outer windows. Above these, there are more casements and sashes, with most featuring architraves, except for the four-bay wings which have flat gauged brick arches. A cornice runs along the third floor, and there are iron railings at the basement level.
Sussex Gardens, originally known as Grand Junction Road, was an important part of the original layout of Bayswater.
