Description
31A St James's Square is a Grade II listed terrace house located on a corner site, built around 1772 with the top two floors added after 1850. The building features brown brick and a slate roof, standing five storeys tall with a basement. It is two windows wide facing the former John Street, with one blind window on the return to the square. The entrance is on the left, featuring an original panelled door set within a pedimented doorcase designed by Brian O'Rorke in 1936. The windows have recessed glazing bar sashes beneath flat gauged arches. There is a deep stone plat band above the ground floor and a sill band at the first floor, along with a brick sill band at the third floor. The crowning stone modillion cornice may be the original, reset. The return side has one blind window centered on each floor. The property is enclosed by cast iron area railings. Inside, the interior is plain, with a staircase compartment that contains an open well stair leading to the rear.
