Description
No. 1 Bentinck Street is an end-of-terrace town house built around 1800. It features stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and has a concealed slate roof. The building stands four storeys tall with a basement and is five windows wide, including a two-window return to Welbeck Street.
The central entrance is highlighted by an early 19th-century stucco portico-porch supported by engaged Doric columns and a cornice, which is carried on consoles at the corners. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes; those on the ground floor have vermiculated keystones, while the second-floor windows are topped with semicircular arches that contain stucco, fan-ornamented lunettes. The first and third-floor windows have flat, gauged red brick arches.
The window bays are defined by shallow brick pilaster strips that extend the full height above the ground floor. There is a stucco string on the first floor with ovolo decoration, and the building has a parapet with coping. A cast iron balcony featuring an acanthus motif is located over the portico-porch, and there are cast iron area railings with urn finials.
