Description
This is a terrace of houses built in the early to mid-19th century. It is located on Sussex Gardens in the City of Westminster. The houses are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with some parts painted. The ground floor is channelled stucco, and the dressings are also stucco. The terrace is four storeys high with a basement and attics to some parts.
The design is irregular, comprising ten 'central' bays flanked by a four-bay breakforward; followed to the right by sixteen bays, with a central four-bay breakforward; then to the left by sixteen bays and a further six-bay breakforward. Numbers 163 to 213 (odd) have projecting Tuscan porches, some decorated with metopes and triglyphs. The entrances are pilastered and have overlights, with tripartite sash windows, some of which have been replaced. An iron balcony is present on the first floor. The upper floor windows are casements in architraves with hoods on consoles; some of these hoods are pedimented. Above these are further casements or sash windows with glazing bars, also in architraves with hoods. A dentil cornice runs along part of the building. Number 163 has a four-bay return to Sussex Place, featuring an Ionic porch. Original iron basement railings are present. Sussex Gardens, originally known as Grand Junction Road, was an important component of the original Bayswater layout.
