Description

The lamp post outside 6-7 Chandos Place is a gas street light dating from 1910. It features a column with an Upright Rochester lantern, likely manufactured by William Sugg and Company Limited around 1930.

The lamp post is made of cast iron and has a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. The column is tapering and fluted, identified as model 1275 in the William Sugg catalogue, known as the 'Eddystone'. The base of the column displays the Westminster City Council crest on one side and the royal cypher G V R along with the date 1910 on the other side. Additional plaques at the base include an illegible serial number and the name of the column manufacturer, Revo Tipton.

The lantern features a circular, weatherproof chimney above a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure with a drainage hole at the base. Inside the enclosure is a six-mantle burner and a Horstmann automatic gas controller, likely from the mid-20th century. The main body of the lantern is supported by a pair of upright arms that extend at right angles from the cast iron control clock box and hold a horizontal enamelled steel reflector to supply gas to the burner. These arms retain their original decorative ironwork scrolls, typical of inter-war Rochester lanterns, although the lower parts of the scrolls have been lost.
