Description

No 59 Grosvenor Street is a terrace house built in 1725, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and again in 1909-10. The building is constructed of red brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof. It has four storeys, a basement, and an attic with dormers. The front has four windows and is flanked by giant pilasters, which support a stone entablature above the second floor. The attic pilasters also support a stone cornice topped with a parapet.

The entrance features a Tuscan porch with a balustraded parapet. The windows have sashes without glazing bars set in architrave surrounds, with the first-floor windows adorned with keystones and alternating pediments, while the second-floor windows have keystones only. The top floor windows have flat gauged arches, and the dormers have cambered heads. There are bracketed stone balconies on the first floor with cast iron balustrades, and the area is enclosed by 18th-century railings topped with urn finials.

Inside, the house retains its original front compartment staircase, which has a wooden cut string with carved tread ends and twisted balusters. The compartment features an elaborate original stucco ceiling. The principal rooms contain panelling, cornices, and chimneypieces that are partly original and partly Edwardian.
