Description

A terrace of houses forming the south side of Dorset Square, built around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. Numbers 35 to 38 were later rebuilt to match the originals. The houses are constructed of brown stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor, while numbers 39 and 40 are fully stuccoed. Slate roofs are largely hidden behind the parapets. The terrace is four storeys high with basements, some incorporating dormered mansards. Each house has a three-window front. Semicircular arched doorways are located on the left side, featuring inset Greek Doric columns and decorative Greek fret doorheads framing panelled doors and fanlights. The windows are recessed sash windows, most retaining their original glazing bars and set within flat, gauged arches. A plat band defines the end of the stucco ground floor. Decorative stucco cornices and blocking courses feature at the roofline. Original cast iron balconies with geometric and anthemion patterns are present on the first floor. The original cast iron area railings are topped with urn finials.
