Description

Nos 261 to 271 on Regent Street, located in the City of Westminster, is an office and shop block that forms part of the northwestern quadrant of Oxford Circus. Designed by Sir Henry Tanner, it was completed in 1928. The building features Portland stone cladding over a steel frame and has a slate roof. It is designed in a classical style with Beaux Arts details, presenting a symmetrical composition alongside the other quadrant blocks that frame the circus.

The structure rises four tall storeys with double attics, which are topped with steep mansards and pavilion roofs. The upper floors, including the returns, are arranged with projecting pavilions that flank the quadrant and serve as terminal features. The windows are grouped in a sequence from the north end of the block, displaying a pattern of 3; a splayed corner; 1; 3; 9; 3; 3 towards the quadrant and 3 towards Oxford Street.

The ground floor shop fronts are enhanced by pilasters that are decorated with wreathed shields and crowned by cherub heads. The upper floors feature architraved bronze casements, with the second floor showcasing alternating open segmental and triangular pediments. The pavilions are adorned with a giant order of Ionic columns and pilasters, enriched window aprons, and bronze balconies at their central windows. Giant Ionic columns separate the tripartite bronze pilastered and framed windows. The main entablature below the attic is topped with a balustraded parapet, and the building also includes corniced dormers, stone chimney stacks, and roof ridges with bronze crestings and triumphal ornaments.
