Description
Orchard House is a commercial building located at 14 Great Smith Street, dating from 1898. It features modelled terracotta by W J Neatby Birch, with terracotta dressings and ornaments, and has a plain tile roof at the eaves. The building is designed in a free style and stands four storeys tall, plus low dormers. It occupies a corner site, with one bay facing Great Smith Street and eight bays along Abbey Orchard Street, where the entrance is located at the splayed corner.
The ground floor includes a shop with arched lights above the shop windows and door. The arched windows on the ground floor are complemented by square-headed windows above, all set in terracotta surrounds. The upper floors feature casement windows, with paired square-headed windows on the third floor separated by rusticated terracotta columns. A stuccoed cornice runs along the eaves, and there are small arched dormer windows with glazing bars. Above the entrance bay on Abbey Orchard Street, there is a decorative fleche, and the corner entrance and the entrance from Abbey Orchard Street have fine quality moulded terracotta doorheads. The corner entrance displays the words 'Orchard House,' while the Abbey Orchard Street entrance features peacock motifs and female corbel heads. Additional decorative elements include a pediment with the date above the top window of the Abbey Orchard Street entrance bay.
