Description

The North West Wing of Bedford College is a college building constructed between 1910 and 1913 by architect Basil Champneys. It is made of red brick with a tiled roof and features a long range with the main central block projecting towards the northwest front. The design incorporates elements of free style, with influences from 17th century vernacular and Georgian Revival architecture. The building has three and four storeys and presents a symmetrical five-bay centre, where the three central bays are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. There are two gabled bays on each side and set-back wings that have linked gables. The central doorway is flanked by flush framed mullioned and transomed glazing bar casements, which are set under flat cambered gauged brick arches. The eaves cornice is bracketed, and there is a bold pediment above. The wings on the southeast front are only slightly set back and feature projecting pediments capped with gabled bays. There are extensions at the north end of the building.
