Description
This building is a corner block of offices located at 1-5 Chandos Place, constructed between 1876 and 1877 by the Bradford architectural firm Lockwood and Mawson for the Civil Service Supply Association. In 1984, the interior was gutted, but the facades were retained and restored. The structure is made of hard red brick and terracotta, featuring a leaded attic. It showcases the Roman Renaissance style typical of the firm's warehouses in Bradford.
The building has three storeys plus an attic storey and a basement on the sloping Bedford Street side, with a 20th-century leaded dormered mansard roof. There are ten windows facing Bedford Street, one on the chamfered corner, and twelve on the front of Chandos Place. The corner entrance is solid and pedimented, adorned with incised ornamentation, and there is a secondary pedimented doorway along Chandos Place.
The ground floor windows are deeply recessed between boldly channelled brick piers with enriched banding. The first and second floor windows are vertically linked by terracotta dressings, featuring architraves, and on the first floor, they have archivolt heads above the sashes, framed by pilasters and topped with pediments. The window bays on Bedford Street and at the corner are highlighted by giant Corinthian pilasters with fluted and banded shafts on the first and second floors. The attic storey windows have eared terracotta architraves. A deep garlanded entablature runs above the second floor, topped by an attic cornice and blocking course.
