Description

Fairacres is a block of 64 flats built in 1936 by Minoprio and Spencely. The building was designed in a modern style but employs traditional construction methods, featuring solid brick walls chosen for their noise-insulating properties. It comprises eight blocks arranged in a semi-elliptical plan, numbered 1 to 64. The projecting end bays are characterised by curved corners. Each block has a tapering entrance hall leading to a circular stair located at the angle between the blocks. Brick balconies link the blocks at the upper levels. The windows are metal casements with plate glass. Later alterations have been made to the entrances, which now feature modern doors with mosaic tile surrounds. Glazed canopies are positioned over each entrance and set of balconies.
