Description
This is a mid-Georgian house with substantial additions dating from 1837 to 1838, commissioned by Robert Hutton and designed by Decimus Burton. The original section of the house, which forms the north front, consists of five bays and two storeys, with a slightly projecting central bay containing the entrance. The brickwork is painted and features gauged, flat arches. This original portion now serves as a service wing to the later, larger extension.
The 1837-8 extension is two storeys high and rendered in stucco, built in a stripped Greek Revival style. The roof was replaced in 1981 following a fire. The north front incorporates a closed Doric porch with coupled pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course. The south front, overlooking the garden, has a prominent, full-height, semi-circular bow containing three windows, with recessed bays on either side and valances to some windows. A single-storey, canted bay is located on the west front.
The interior of the 1837-8 extension retains a fine staircase with an iron balustrade, along with several original cornices and fireplaces on the ground floor, although some have been boxed in. The interior of the original service wing contains no significant surviving features.
