Description
Mount Clare is a Grade I listed building dating from 1772, likely designed by Sir Robert Taylor, and later enlarged in 1780 by Columbani. The structure is two stories high with a basement and features five bays. It is constructed of stucco with a rusticated stone basement. The central three bays project and are topped with a pediment and a wooden Doric tetrastyle balustraded portico. This portico has a modelled plaster ceiling and is raised above an arched basement, accessed by two curved flights of stone steps with wooden railings. The building has a dentil cornice and the rear elevation includes a semi-octagonal projection at the center.
Inside, the entrance hall boasts a vaulted and shallow coffered ceiling, while a geometrical stone staircase features a wooden balustrade. The octagonal drawing room is notable for its delicately modelled ceiling and niches, along with marble fireplaces and other fine interior details. The grounds contain the dismantled remains of a circular Composite temple, with the columns stored in the basement. The marble capitals of two columns are Roman in style. Mount Clare was built by George Clive, who was a cousin of Lord Clive, and the gardens were designed by Capability Brown.
