Description

Blackwall Basin, built between 1800 and 1802 by engineer William Jessop, is the first non-tidal basin in the Port of London. It features construction similar to the Import and Export Docks, with concave buttressed quay walls, and much of the coping is made of high-quality ashlar masonry. The locks were enlarged in the 1890s, maintaining the tradition with brick-lined chambers and granite quays. The lock leading into the Poplar Railway Dock also dates from the 1890s.
