Description

The Shadwell (St Paul's) War Memorial is a stone calvary cross dated to the aftermath of World War I, specifically commemorating the men of Shadwell who died in service between 1914 and 1918. The cross is hooded and features an INRI scroll. It stands upon a stone plinth bearing the inscription "AMDG* / IN LOVING AND / HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE / MEN OF SHADWELL / WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR / KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE WAR / 1914 - 1918 / RIP." The inscription is accompanied by the traditional Jesuit motto, "Ad Maiorum Dei Gloriam," which translates to "to the greater glory of God." The memorial is set upon a three-stepped stone base.
