Description
St Paul's Terrace is a small stepped terrace of two-storey, one-bay houses built around 1820 using stock brick. The terrace is located against the east retaining wall of St Paul's Shadwell churchyard. It features stepped plinths and first-floor stone sill bands, along with plain stepped parapet copings. The ground floor windows are two-light wood casements, each with three horizontal panes and thin glazing bars, topped with flat gauged brick arches. The first-floor windows are similar but slightly narrower and set within semi-circular arched panels. The doorways are in arched openings with pilastered reveals, moulded doorheads, and plain fanlights, and the doors consist of four moulded panels. A stone flagged path runs in front of the houses. This terrace is a good example of a small-scale early 19th-century artisan's dwelling, notable for its architectural features like arcading and gauged brick window heads. Its value is enhanced by its close proximity to the listed St Paul's Church. The terrace also holds sociological interest as it is situated on the Highway, formerly known as Ratcliff Highway, which became one of the most notoriously dangerous and overcrowded areas in London during the 19th century.
