Description

Poplar Public Library, located at 45 Gillender Street, was built in 1904-1905 by the architectural firm Squire, Myers and Petch. The library features a façade of white ashlar masonry and has a slate roof with a balustraded parapet. It is two storeys tall and includes dormers and basements. The central recessed section has four windows, flanked by advanced wings with one bay each. Giant engaged Ionic pillars are positioned between the windows, and the lower windows have round arched heads with keystones. The basement is rusticated, and the doorway is topped with a gabled hood, which is supported by rusticated, engaged pillars and an inner architrave.
