Description

The Former Bethnal Green British School, also known as the Infants School, is a building designed in 1841 by architect William Wallen as a dedicated infant school for the adjacent British School, originally accommodating 394 children. The school is constructed in a classical style using stock brick and features a hipped slate roof with two brick chimneystacks. It stands two storeys high with a front facade consisting of three bays. The central bay has a pediment and a tripartite sash window with a panel underneath, flanked by 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor includes two later 19th-century screen walls added to the central bay, which incorporate cambered openings with cast iron gates.

The side elevations consist of five bays, characterized by full-height pilasters and a plat band that defines the bays, with cambered openings primarily featuring 20-pane sash windows. The bays closest to the front are blank to accommodate the chimneys. At the time of inspection, one window had been enlarged. The rear of the building faces the earlier school building and includes a semicircular staircase turret. Originally, the interior had one large ground floor room and two first-floor classrooms, but the divisions have since been removed. The building features kingpost roof trusses and is recognized as an early and rare example of its type.
