Description

These early 19th-century area railings are located at number 20 in St Matthews Row. A plaque reading "St Mathews House" is set into the entrance floor tiles. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick, with the ground floor grooved and rendered. It features a parapet with a cornice and a hipped roof. The building is two storeys and has a basement, with five windows on the front elevation. These windows are sash windows, each set beneath a gothic arch with a keystone. The side elevation, which faces the churchyard, has ten windows, largely with gothic glazing bars. A gothic arch provides access to the doorway from St Matthews Row, featuring a keystone and plain impost caps. The iron area railings are ornamented with spearhead finials and four round-headed decorative panels. The listed buildings in St Matthews Row are considered to form a group with the Parish Watch House, Wood’s Close.
