Description
'Lesson' is a bronze sculpture group created by Franta Belsky between 1956 and 1957, and it was installed at the corner of Turin Street and Gosset Street in Bethnal Green in 1959. This semi-figurative work portrays a mother teaching her infant son to walk. The mother stands with her legs outstretched, leaning forward over the child while supporting his outstretched arms. She is depicted wearing a dress but is barefoot, while the child is nude, with his right leg raised in a tentative step. The infant features rounded, cherub-like characteristics, which contrast with the mother's muscular, angular, and more abstract form. The sculpture is set on a rough concrete plinth.
