Description
Nos 274 to 290 on Old Ford Road, dating from the mid to late 19th century, are built of stock brick and feature a bracketed stucco eaves cornice and band. There are bands at the first and second floor sills, and the building has a slate roof. It stands three storeys high with two windows on each floor, each framed by moulded stucco architraves. The first-floor windows have bracketed labels, and the ground floor has bays. The paired doors are surrounded by stucco with engaged pillars that have composite capitals. Notably, No 288 has a blue plaque indicating that the philosopher and writer Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) lived there. This building is part of a group that includes the Victoria Veneer Mills, Nos 236 to 256, Nos 274 to 302, The Crown Hotel, and The Royal Cricketers Public House, along with the Lodge at Crown Gate West, Victoria Park.
