Description

Fairfield Match Works consists of a gatehouse and a pair of cottages, dating from the later 19th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick with blue banding, and have a slate roof with cresting.

The gatehouse, at the southern end, is two storeys high and features an oriel bay above the entrance. Carved brick plaques are positioned beneath the oriel, and a porch has corner pillars. The cottages are of irregular plan, with unbarred sash windows set in advanced gabled ends. They feature large decorative chimneys. A large gothic terracotta arched doorway is a prominent feature, displaying a bas relief of a boat on the sea, with the word "Security" inscribed below.

The buildings and wall which form part of the listing are considered important to the social and economic history of Bow.
