Description
The Tomb of Joseph Westwood is a funerary monument located in Tower Hamlets Cemetery, commemorating Joseph Westwood, who died in 1883. Made of Portland stone, the monument features a Decorated wayside cross with a crocketed spire supported by four open arches and angle buttresses. It has a square plinth with stepped angle buttresses and recessed ogee inscription panels on each face. The finials are made of metal. Originally, an allegorical statue of a female stood within the canopy. The lowest base has a tiled surface, and there are low, two-tier cast-iron railings with bulbous finials that survive in part. Westwood was the head of a shipbuilding and engineering firm, and this monument is the most imposing in the cemetery, prominently situated at one of the main crossroads.
