Description

Numbers 5 and 7 are a pair of houses built around 1843 to 1845, likely designed by the Brighton architect Amon Henry Wilds. They are stucco-faced with a hipped slate roof, featuring overhanging eaves. The houses are two storeys high, with a rusticated semi-basement, and each has two bays. Prominent giant fluted Ionic pilasters extend through the ground and first floors, defining the inner bay of each house and supporting segmental arches above the first-floor windows. The outer entrance bays are slightly recessed, with steps leading up to a square Ionic porch, which has a deep entablature and matching pilasters. The windows are sash windows; those in the inner bays have segmental heads, while those above the porch are round-headed within shallow round-arched recesses. A string course runs above the basement. The ground-floor windows have cast-iron grilles. The interior has not been inspected. The property includes area railings and rails at the porch. Numbers 5 and 7 are part of a larger group, consisting of a row of nine identical, semi-detached pairs facing a similar row of four; Numbers 1-35 (odd) and 24-38 (even) comprise the group.
