Numbers 24 And 26 And Attached Railings

Numbers 24 and 26 are two houses built around 1843-1845, likely designed by the Brighton architect Amon Henry Wilds. They are constructed of stucco and feature a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. Each house has two storeys and a semi-basement, with two bays. Giant fluted Ionic pilasters extend through both the ground and first floors, flanking the inner bay of each house and supporting segmental arches above the first-floor windows. The outer entrance bays are slightly recessed, with steps leading up to a square Ionic porch that has a deep entablature and corresponding pilasters on either side of the door. The houses have sash windows, with segmental-headed windows in the inner bays and round-headed windows above the porch set in shallow round-arched recesses. There is a string course above the basement and decorative cast-iron grilles on the ground-floor windows. The interior has not been inspected. The houses are part of a row of four identical semi-detached pairs, set back from the street, which face a similar row of nine houses. Numbers 1-35 (odd) and 24-38 (even) form a group.
